Which CMU dining plan is actually worth it in 2026-27
The tiers differ by more than price. What each CMU dining plan buys per block, and how the first year and upperclass versions compare.

A dining plan is two purchases in one price
Part of what you pay buys meal blocks, which are meal exchanges at dining locations on campus. The rest buys a declining balance you spend like money, bundled into the same sticker price. CMU calls that balance FLEX. Every tier splits the price between the two differently, and that split is what makes comparing the plans harder than reading their prices.
So the useful question is not which plan costs the most. It is what each plan charges for one meal, and how much of your money it puts somewhere other than meals.
Every plan, priced out
The whole catalog, largest plan first. The last column is the one worth reading twice: what one block costs after the bundled balance is taken out of the price.

The biggest plan is not the priciest meal
Ranking the plans by what one block costs puts them in a different order than ranking them by price. That is not a rounding artefact. A plan carrying a large bundled balance is spending less of your money on blocks, so the blocks it does include have to absorb more of the price.
What one block costs at CMU
Cheapest first. The bar is the real cost of one block once the bundled dining dollars are taken out of the plan price. The figure beside it is what the plan price divided by the blocks would suggest.

real cost per unitplan price divided by unit count
Read from Carnegie Mellon University's own published dining plan agreements.
Read both figures on each row together. The dashed outline is the plan price divided by the block count, which is the arithmetic almost everyone does. The filled bar is what is actually left for the blocks. On the tiers that bundle the most, the two answers are not close.
What changes as you move down the tiers
Moving to a smaller plan does not simply buy fewer meals at the same rate. It shifts money out of blocks and into the balance, which is a different product: blocks are meals at a fixed exchange, and the balance is cash that competes with everything else you might buy.
What each plan's price buys at CMU
Each bar is one plan's whole price, split into the part that buys blocks and the part that is bundled dining dollars.

If you eat most meals on campus, the shift works against you, because you end up buying meals twice. If you cook, or you eat off campus often, it works for you.
First years and everyone else pay different prices
The same plan names appear in both agreements at different prices, and the upperclass version of each tier is the cheaper one. The table above groups the plans by the audience each name states, so you are comparing like with like. The community plans, which trade a much lower commitment for far fewer blocks, state no audience in their names and sit in their own group.
A first year student who does not submit the dining plan agreement by 31 May 2026 is assigned the Blue Plan automatically. Fall plan changes are accepted until 5pm on 18 September 2026, and there is no change period in the spring semester.
How to actually choose
The plan worth paying for is the one whose block count you will finish. Every block you do not use is the full per-block figure in the table, gone, because nothing carries into the next semester.
- Count the meals you will really eat on campus in an ordinary week, not the meals you intend to.
- Multiply by the weeks in the semester, then take the plan whose block count sits just below that number.
- Treat the bundled balance as a separate budget. It is money, and it expires with the semester.
- Between two tiers, the smaller plan plus your own money usually beats the larger plan plus blocks you will not use.
That is the whole method. The figures above are the school's own, and they are read live, so this page is worth checking again if CMU changes its pricing.
